French Chicken DishThe French cuisine is known world wide as being one of the best and there is a great variety and history behind the food. Here are some examples of the variety available and also a little about the history of the cuisine;

History of French Cuisine

The cuisine of France has influences from several other countries and has developed over the years to have its own style and traditional dishes. Some of the influences include the Italians with a lot of pasta dishes being popular. The French first began to take a serious interest in their own dishes during the 17th Century when the first French cook book was published by a well known chef of that time.

Types of French Food

As with other countries cuisine there is a wide variety of different styles of dish from the starters to the desserts. Some examples of the various dishes associated with France include;

  • French Starter Courses - An example of a popular French starter is onion soup it is basically a combination of stewed onions, cheese and stock. The onions are stewed until golden brown when browned the other ingredients are added and then the mixture is simmered for around an hour until ready.
  • French Main Dishes - A well known French main meal is the chicken cordon bleu which can be served with either a pasta base or potatoes and vegetables. It is a fairly simple dish to make you take pieces of chicken season with salt and paprika, you then take a piece of ham and place on top of the chicken then cheese on top of that and roll the chicken up. When rolled secure with a cocktail stick and roast in the oven until fully cooked. It is accompanied by a sauce that you make with the chicken stock, whipping cream and corn starch, this is poured over once the chicken is cooked.
  • French RestaurantsFrench Desserts - A simple and wide known dessert is the French Toast which is versatile in the way you can add nearly anything to it for flavour such as strawberries or maple syrup is another favourite. It is extremely simple to make all you have to do is dip the bread in an egg and cinnamon mixture then fry on either side until the egg is cooked or golden brown on either side. Then you simply add your chosen fruit or sauce etc.
